Remember to Get Your Flu Shot Before Halloween

We're already on the brink of a full-blown flu season here in Florida, and doctors are saying that you should get your flu shot ASAP. Last year's season was one of the worst we've seen in over a decade and health officials are hoping to avoid a high flu death toll this season.

The vaccination this year has changed to cover the strains that are circulating this season, and according to the CDC, the shot may reduce your chances of getting influenza by 40 to 60 percent. Even if you do contract the illness after getting the vaccine, it should reduce the severity of the flu and help prevent hospitalization.

Everyone over the age of six months should be vaccinated by the end of October. There are specialized dosages for high-risk groups like the children and the elderly, and this year, many places are even offering the nasal spray instead of needle-based vaccines. If you've heard that getting the flu shot makes you contract the flu, disregard the myth. The CDC has stated that there is no possibility of getting influenza from the vaccine
